To heal and enable young adults through the craft of specialty coffee.
Join the cause

to heal and enable transitioning orphans

Rhiza Coffee Co. is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization that uses specialty coffee to support and empower orphaned young adults in their transition to independence.

We are dedicated to helping vulnerable young adults become independent and economically sustainable, have a depth in personal relationships, live interdependently with their community, and build a strong faith in Jesus Christ.

Our mission

Depending on the region, children “age out” of the orphan care home between ages 16-18. So, at a time when most young adults are still relying on family for financial and emotional support, plus a place to crash on school breaks, children aging out of care are often fully on their own.  As a result orphaned teenagers living in Peru, often lack the training and support that is necessary for a successful transition from a group-home to financial and emotional independence.

Our Goal…

is to holistically address the physical, social, emotional, and spiritual needs of each individual by providing job skills training, trauma-based support, and Christian discipleship. We believe that this will empower young people to overcome present circumstances and break free from the cycle of generational poverty. We are dedicated to helping vulnerable young adults become independent and economically sustainable, have a depth in personal relationships, live interdependently with their community, and build a strong faith in Jesus Christ.

We partner with local transitional organizations in Peru and run cafes that focus on cultivating a healthy work environment and utilize the craft of specialty coffee.

About us

Becca Harrison went to Peru two days after earning a Bachelor’s degree from North Park University and she hasn’t looked back. In addition to her working with orphans in Peru, she has been working in the coffee industry for the last several years in order to gain knowledge and experience that will inform the direction of Rhiza. She is passionate about the educational process found within a cafe environment and how that can be used to help young adults to tap into their God-given identity and purpose as they grow. This passion is what led her to envision the mission and vision of Rhiza. She is very excited to have a wonderful team forming around her in the foundational phase of starting the Rhiza ministry.

Matthew Schlener, has always had a connection to Peru. His Mom was born there and he still has relatives that live in the capital city of Lima. While he attended Northern Virginia Community College, he started working in the coffee industry. Initially just a dishwasher, he slowly worked his way up until becoming general manager of a specialty coffee shop. During his time working in coffee, he was leading students within a Young Life Group. He started to feel prompted to start praying for direction in what steps to take next in his life when he met Rebecca Harrison. After praying for a month about where God was leading, it was apparent that God was preparing him to go to Peru to start Rhiza Coffee Co.! He is elated to be a part of a project that positively influences young adults that are at Luz de Vida Casa Hogar.
